Instead of relying on regular street traffic lights, the German city of Augsburg is trying to get the attention of people of that never look up when they walk, by embedding traffic lights in the ground. The same area that you generally look at when being a ‘distracted walker’.
The LED traffic lights have been installed as a potential solution to the ‘distracted walker’ problem after a young woman lost her life after not noticing an oncoming train.
