Designer Elinor Portnoy has created a colorful glass juicer, made from hand blown glass, which has been carved and ground to a smooth finish.

During this past year I’ve made a Citrus Juicer made of hand blown, multilayer coloured glass which was then carved and ground.

As nowadays, the kitchen area and the kitchen counter in particular is not only a working station but also a hosting space, the items and tools we display on them have the potential to become decorative and sculptural objects, much like a book holder is for the shelving unit or a paper weight for the office desk.

I’ve decided to make a tool for the kitchen that will attempt to question the way we perceive function and form. These citrus squeezers are made of glass with multiple colours, revealed by coldworking to “peel off” the layers, much like the fruit it squeezes. They are sculptured and shaped by hand into a form that will easily extract the juice, while the inner bubble makes it both lighter and easier to hold, and the outer layer is sandblasted for a better grip finish.
