When architecture firm Stonehill & Taylor, were designing the recently completed Renwick Hotel in New York, they used a simple trick to help the beds in the room claim their space.

To break up the blank canvas of white walls, they visually extended the headboard by painting a matching stripe up the wall and across the ceiling, clearly defining the sleeping area from the rest of the room.
