In Seattle’s Central District, architecture firm Hybrid completed Oak & Alder, a townhouse project designed for two very different homeowners. One residence was created for a family of four who moved from Copenhagen to Seattle to launch a video game company, while the other was designed for a single homeowner looking for a unique place to live.
Built on a former single-family lot, the project adds housing while drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s existing architecture.
A Bold Exterior Inspired by the Neighborhood
Oak & Alder immediately stands out thanks to its corten steel exterior, which has developed a rich weathered finish over time. Large black-framed windows and skylights add contrast while bringing natural light into the homes.
The design takes cues from its surroundings. The rust-colored steel references the red brick high school across the street, while the dramatically pitched roofline echoes the craftsman homes found throughout the neighborhood. Together, these elements give the project a distinctive identity while connecting it to the area’s architectural history.
A Family Home Filled with Light and Color
The first townhouse was designed around the needs of a growing family. Inside, colorful interiors create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
An open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area forms the heart of the home, providing plenty of space for gathering and everyday activities. Dedicated home offices support the parents’ work, while the children’s bedrooms include comfortable spaces for relaxing, studying, and playing.
Large windows help fill the interior with daylight, creating bright and inviting rooms throughout the home.
A Minimalist Home for Creative Living
The second townhouse takes a different approach. Designed for a single homeowner, the interior embraces a simpler aesthetic while maintaining a bright and comfortable feel.
The kitchen pairs white and wood cabinetry, creating a clean and timeless look. Nearby, a dining area with colorful chairs adds personality to the space. The living room remains minimal, with a striped rug introducing texture without overwhelming the design.
On the upper levels, bedrooms are joined by a dedicated music studio, giving the homeowner a place to focus on creative pursuits.
