Curves and Columns Define This Australian Residential Building

A sculptural residential building in Prahran, Victoria, designed by Wood Marsh. Flowing curves, organic forms, and luxurious interiors make No. 6 Sydney Street a standout example of contemporary Australian architecture.

In Prahran, Victoria, architecture and interior design firm Wood Marsh completed No. 6 Sydney Street, a residential building that blurs the line between architecture and sculpture. Developed in collaboration with V-Leader, the project introduces a striking new presence to the streetscape through a composition of flowing forms, curved surfaces, and finely crafted details.

Home to a collection of residences, the building immediately stands apart from its more rectilinear neighbors. Its asymmetrical form appears as though it has been carved from a single piece of material, creating an organic expression that feels fluid from every angle. Inspired by natural forms, the design brings movement and softness to an urban setting while establishing a strong architectural identity.

Curves and Columns That Define the Architecture

The most recognizable feature of No. 6 Sydney Street is its sweeping curved form. The building’s exterior avoids the rigid geometry often associated with apartment buildings, replacing sharp edges with flowing lines and softened surfaces.

Its asymmetrical shape gives the impression that the structure has been sculpted from a single raw material. Deep ripples across the facade create layers of light and shadow throughout the day, adding visual depth and movement.

Equally distinctive are the flared columns that support the building. Instead of functioning as purely structural elements, they become an integral part of the architectural expression. Their sculpted profiles soften the overall composition and introduce a sense of artistry that continues throughout the project. Together with the curved floorplates, these columns help create a building that feels dynamic and constantly changing depending on the viewing angle.

Living Spaces Framed by Architecture

The building is home to 16 residences, each offering its own relationship to light, views, and outdoor space. One of the most striking aspects of the interiors is how the architecture remains visible from within.

In the living rooms, the signature flared columns become part of the interior experience, turning structural elements into sculptural features. Floor-to-ceiling glazing fills the spaces with natural light while framing views of surrounding greenery, the neighborhood, and the city beyond.

Floor-to-ceiling windows, curved terraces, and sculptural columns shape the living spaces at No. 6 Sydney Street, where architecture becomes part of the interior design experience.

Curved terraces extend the living areas outdoors, continuing the flowing language established by the architecture. The result is a seamless visual connection between interior and exterior spaces, with the building’s organic forms present throughout the resident experience.

Many interior surfaces also take cues from the exterior design. Curved walls and softly rounded volumes introduce a sense of continuity, reinforcing the building’s sculptural character while creating inviting and elegant living environments.

A Dining Area With a Sense of Privacy

Adjacent to the living space, the dining area benefits from a more intimate atmosphere. Partially obscured from the main living zones, it creates a semi-private setting that feels distinct while remaining connected to the larger open-plan layout.

This subtle separation allows the dining space to function as its own destination within the home. The arrangement balances openness and privacy, providing a comfortable environment for everyday meals and entertaining alike.

Warmth and Craftsmanship in the Kitchen

The kitchens showcase Wood Marsh’s focus on material quality and craftsmanship. Highly crafted joinery in natural timber introduces warmth and texture, while book-matched marble surfaces add elegance and visual impact.

The pairing of these materials creates a balance between richness and restraint. The marble’s distinctive veining becomes a focal point, while the timber softens the overall aesthetic and adds a welcoming quality.

Soft Textures Shape the Bedrooms

The bedrooms continue the project’s refined material palette while introducing a softer atmosphere. Lightweight curtains filter daylight and create a gentle visual softness throughout the rooms.

These flowing fabrics complement the building’s curved forms, adding movement and texture while maintaining a calm and elegant environment. Combined with generous glazing and a restrained palette, the bedrooms offer a sense of comfort and sophistication.

Travertine and Texture in the Bathrooms

The bathrooms introduce another layer of material richness through the use of travertine mosaic tile. Wrapping the walls, the mosaic provides subtle texture and depth, enhancing the tactile quality of the spaces.

Contrasting against these textured surfaces are floating vanities crafted from stained timber and stone. The combination of natural materials creates visual balance while emphasizing the project’s commitment to craftsmanship.

Understanding the Building Through Its Elevations

The elevations also showcase how the building breaks away from the rigid geometry of surrounding structures. Every curve, recess, and projection contributes to a composition that feels fluid and expressive, reinforcing the project’s identity as both architecture and sculpture.
