In the southern outskirts of Macas, Ecuador, Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura designed an outdoor entertaining space that offers a break from city life. Set across a large urban plot used for fishing and livestock, the project introduces a relaxed gathering spot that blends leisure with rural activity.
What makes it stand out is its starting point. Instead of building from scratch, the design works around an existing structure, turning something purely functional into a place for socializing.

A Pavilion Built for Gathering
The new pavilion acts as a social hub on the property. It brings together two main elements, a repurposed water reservoir tank and a sunken conversation pit.
Used during fishing trips or while managing livestock, the space shifts easily between work and downtime. It is informal, open, and designed to host everything from small family moments to larger gatherings.

From Water Storage to Bar
The water reservoir tank once played a practical role, supplying water for livestock and irrigation. When potable water reached the area, it was no longer needed and sat unused.
Instead of removing it, the structure was transformed into a fully functioning bar. Inside, it now includes storage, water access, and a fridge, turning a redundant object into the focal point of the entire space.
Its weathered exterior was left untouched, preserving the natural rust that gives it a raw, textured look.

Linking Spaces With Light and Structure
A wooden pergola connects the bar to the conversation pit, creating a sheltered zone that ties everything together. The structure is topped with translucent polycarbonate, allowing daylight to filter through while still offering protection.
Underfoot, ceramic tiles introduce a mix of colors and patterns. Organic shapes meet geometric lines, adding visual interest and giving the space a more contemporary feel.

A Sunken Lounge Designed for Evenings
The conversation pit forms the second half of the pavilion. Wrapped in a timber deck, it creates a lowered seating area that encourages people to gather and stay awhile.
As the sun sets, LED lighting brings the space to life, highlighting both the seating area and the bar. The result is an atmosphere that shifts from casual daytime use to a more ambient evening setting.

Plans That Bring It All Together
The layout of the pavilion shows how each element connects. The bar sits within the former tank, the pergola links the zones, and the conversation pit anchors the social area. Everything works as a single composition, balancing reuse, material contrast, and open-air design.

This project shows how an overlooked structure can be turned into something entirely new without losing its original character. By working with what was already on site, the design avoids unnecessary waste while creating a space that feels both practical and inviting.
