In the Farrer Road neighbourhood near the Botanic Gardens in Singapore, Sky Pavilion House by Guz Architects takes an unusual site and transforms it into a home filled with greenery, open-air spaces, and cooling breezes. Designed for clients who wanted gardens woven throughout the property and fresh air moving naturally through the house, the project embraces tropical living from the ground floor all the way to the rooftop.
Because the site is highly visible and irregular in shape, the house turns away from the street and focuses on the landscaped garden at the rear. This creates a greater sense of privacy while drawing attention to the outdoor spaces that play such an important role in the home’s design.
One of the standout features is the swimming pool, which stretches alongside the house and is anchored by a small island planted with a Frangipani tree. Together with the surrounding gardens, the pool helps lower temperatures around the home through passive cooling.
The greenery becomes part of the everyday experience, creating views from multiple rooms and bringing a sense of freshness to the property. The result is a home where water, planting, and architecture work together to create a comfortable environment in Singapore’s tropical climate.
At the centre of the two-storey residence is a striking glass-framed staircase. Running in a straight line through the length of the house, it acts as a visual spine that links the different floors together.
The transparency of the staircase allows light to move through the interior while maintaining views across the home. It also creates a strong architectural feature that draws the eye upward toward the upper-level bedrooms and the rooftop spaces beyond.
The bedrooms are positioned on the upper floor, where they enjoy views across the swimming pool and landscaped gardens below. Large openings help capture breezes while maintaining a strong visual connection to the outdoor areas.
Oversized roof eaves extend beyond the walls, helping protect the home from both intense sunlight and heavy rain. These generous overhangs also contribute to a cooler interior environment, reducing heat gain while providing shelter throughout the year.
The feature that gives the house its name sits at the very top. A rooftop garden covers the attic level, creating an additional layer of greenery while helping cool the bedrooms below.
Within this elevated garden is a shaded pavilion designed as an entertaining space. Positioned to capture breezes and take advantage of the surrounding views, it offers a completely different experience from the garden areas below. From this vantage point, the house expands beyond its walls, opening up to the skyline and landscape beyond.
Sky Pavilion House combines several strategies that help improve comfort and reduce energy use.
