Set in La Conception and designed by MU Architecture, The Albatross rises from the rugged landscape of Québec’s Laurentians with an architectural presence that feels both futuristic and familiar. Positioned near the untouched shoreline of Lake Xavier, the home unfolds across the steep terrain through a series of interconnected forms that stretch toward the water and mountains beyond.

Designed for a modern family with a packed and highly detailed program, the residence balances large social spaces with quieter private zones, all while maintaining a strong sense of warmth. Every room feels linked to the surrounding scenery, whether through expansive glazing, elevated terraces, or carefully framed views of the lake and forest. With nearly 5,000 hours invested into its design, the project reflects an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and technical precision.

White Volumes Hover Above the Landscape
The architecture immediately stands out for its fragmented composition. Instead of one oversized structure, the home is divided into layered volumes that follow the natural slope of the site. This approach softens the scale of the residence while helping it settle more naturally into the mountainous terrain.

Inspired by the albatross bird, the design introduces dramatic cantilevers that extend outward like wings in motion. Raised terraces project toward the lake, creating the sensation that parts of the home are floating above the hillside. The effect becomes even more striking during winter, when the white wood cladding blends almost seamlessly into the snow-covered landscape.

Retro-futuristic influences appear throughout the exterior. Angled rooflines, elongated forms, and sharp geometry create movement from every angle, while the restrained material palette keeps the overall look refined. The architecture reveals itself gradually as visitors move closer, creating a sense of anticipation before the full scale of the home comes into view.

A Welcoming Arrival
The entry sequence introduces the home’s balance of scale and comfort. Visitors step into a spacious arrival area connected directly to the double garage and an oversized mudroom designed for an active outdoor lifestyle.
Natural light washes through the space, the layout creates an effortless flow into the main living areas, making the transition from exterior to interior feel seamless.

A Light-Filled Gathering Space Facing the Lake
The living room opens dramatically toward the surrounding landscape, with expansive glazing framing uninterrupted lake and mountain views. Positioned beside a sunrise-facing terrace, the space feels bright from the earliest hours of the day.

Wood surfaces wrap the interior, creating warmth against the sleek architectural shell. Curved elements soften the room while custom built-ins maintain visual continuity throughout the space. The fireplace acts as a sculptural focal point, anchoring the seating area without interrupting the openness of the layout.
Despite the home’s scale, the living area avoids feeling oversized. The layering of ceiling heights, materials, and furnishings creates a comfortable atmosphere designed for conversation and gathering.

A Dining Space Designed for Large Gatherings
Positioned within the open main level, the dining area was designed to comfortably host large family meals and celebrations. A long table sits beneath generous ceiling heights, while glazing keeps the lake and mountains constantly in view.
The space feels integrated into the surrounding living zones while still maintaining its own identity through lighting, material transitions, and furniture placement. Natural light shifts throughout the day, giving the dining area a different atmosphere from morning to evening.
The open layout also strengthens the connection between cooking, dining, and entertaining, allowing movement between spaces to feel effortless.

Two Sculptural Islands Define the Heart of the Home
The kitchen becomes one of the home’s most social and visually striking spaces. At its center are two irregularly shaped islands that introduce sculptural geometry into the otherwise streamlined interior.

The layout supports both everyday family use and larger entertaining, with a fully equipped service kitchen tucked discreetly behind the main area. Wood cabinetry, integrated storage, and refined detailing maintain continuity with the rest of the interior palette.

Direct access to a sunset-facing outdoor cooking terrace extends the kitchen experience beyond the walls of the home. As daylight shifts across the lake, the space transforms into an ideal setting for evening gatherings.

A Suspended Private Level Above the Trees
The journey upstairs becomes part of the architectural experience itself. As visitors ascend, views gradually open outward toward the lake, building anticipation before reaching the primary suite level.
Positioned like a suspended volume above the landscape, the primary quarters include a bedroom, bathroom, office, meditation room, and walk-in closet. Large windows keep the scenery constantly present, while the warm wood palette adds softness and comfort.
Clean lines, integrated fixtures, and expansive glazing create a calm atmosphere while maintaining the dramatic connection to the outdoors.

Bright Bedrooms Designed for Comfort and Privacy
The children’s bedrooms are located on the garden level, where large windows maintain a strong connection to the outdoors. Each suite includes its own desk area, creating flexible spaces that support both study and relaxation.
The material palette remains consistent with the rest of the home, using wood tones and soft natural light to create warmth. Built-in elements maximize functionality without overcrowding the rooms, keeping the spaces open and adaptable as the family grows.

Built-In Bunks Create the Ultimate Sleepover Zone
One of the most playful areas in the home is the dual-purpose bunkroom and playroom. Four built-in bunk beds transform the lower level into a dedicated gathering space for sleepovers and shared family moments.

The architecture balances functionality with fun through integrated storage, layered lighting, and flexible open space for activities. At one end of the space, the playroom continues the same welcoming material palette while allowing plenty of room for movement and creativity.
Together, these rooms introduce a more relaxed energy into the home while still feeling visually connected to the overall design language.

Entertainment Spaces Wrapped in Warm Materials
The lower level also houses a media room designed for gathering and entertainment. Here, darker tones and layered lighting create a more intimate atmosphere compared to the bright openness of the upper levels.
Built-in cabinetry continues throughout the space, adding texture and warmth while helping the entertainment zones feel comfortable instead of overly formal.

A Spa-Inspired Wellness Zone Near the Lake
The wellness area introduces one of the home’s most immersive sequences. Wrapped in warm wood and frosted glass, the spa-inspired zone moves from sauna to shower to cold plunge before extending outdoors to a hot tub and firepit overlooking the landscape.

An adjacent training room also connects directly to the exterior, reinforcing the relationship between wellness and nature. The material palette shifts subtly here, creating a more cocoon-like atmosphere compared to the openness of the main living spaces. The result feels less like a standard home gym and more like a private wellness club integrated into the architecture itself.

A Functional Space Designed for an Outdoor Lifestyle
The mudroom was designed to support the family’s active lifestyle in the Laurentians. Connected directly to the garage, the oversized space includes integrated storage, a counter, and a built-in sink for handling outdoor gear throughout the seasons.

A Compact Space With Architectural Presence
Even the powder room carries the same level of detail seen throughout the home. Sculptural forms, refined finishes, and subtle lighting transform the smaller space into an extension of the broader architectural vision.
