Hidden among the lush mountains of Mal País, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Tierra y Mar House by Álvarez Arquitectos unfolds across a series of architectural platforms surrounded by tropical forest. Looking toward the Pacific coast, the home uses large openings, terraces and decks to bring the landscape into the spaces throughout the residence.
The design follows principles of bioclimatic and tropical architecture, with the main idea of making the boundary between indoors and outdoors feel less defined.
The coastal location also plays an important role in the design. The roof takes inspiration from the movement of ocean waves, while an exterior bridge reaches toward the forest canopy. The orientation of the house allows it to make use of Pacific views, sunsets, natural ventilation and existing vegetation.
Lush greenery surrounds the living space, contrasting with the warm wood and black-framed architecture. Colorful artwork adds a playful focal point above the seating, while neutral upholstery keeps the room comfortable and allows the tropical planting and ocean views to remain prominent.
Warm wood ceilings and rich timber flooring continue through the open dining area, where sculptural furniture and a long natural-edge dining table add texture to the space.
Warm wood cabinetry and a slatted timber ceiling give the nearby kitchen a natural character, balanced by pale stone surfaces that keep the space light. Textured stone adds another material to the palette while helping define the open kitchen without separating it from the surrounding living areas.
The generous island provides plenty of space for cushioned counter stools, while wide windows bring views of greenery and natural light into the kitchen.
A long infinity pool runs alongside the covered outdoor living area, reflecting the sky and surrounding greenery while looking toward distant ocean views. Pale stone flooring, a warm timber ceiling and soft neutral seating create a simple natural palette, with flowering plants adding color along the hillside.
The deep roof provides shade over the space, creating a comfortable outdoor area for poolside lounging and gatherings while keeping the ocean and tropical landscape firmly in view.
The bedroom has expansive glass doors open directly toward lush palms and views of the ocean. Soft neutral bedding and woven textures keep the space relaxed, with colorful artwork adding a touch of character to the otherwise restrained palette.
The glass doors create an easy transition to the covered outdoor dining area, extending the bedroom toward the surrounding greenery and allowing fresh air, tropical planting and ocean views to become part of the space.
Tierra y Mar House brings together the elements that define its location in Mal País, from lush forest and ocean views to warm timber, open-air spaces and natural ventilation. Across the home, large openings, terraces and decks allow the tropical landscape to remain a constant part of the experience.
Designed by Álvarez Arquitectos, the house shows how a coastal home can respond to its terrain and climate while creating spaces that feel open and relaxed.
